Abstract

Mind-body practices such as Tai Chi Chuan have demonstrated benefits for psychological resilience, yet little research has explored their application among early adolescent, high risk urban populations. This qualitative case study examines the implementation and evaluation of an adaptive, narrative focused Tai Chi Chuan program implemented during a summer camp at a boys & girls club in the Southeastern United States. Drawing on field observations and focus groups, the study explores how youth engaged with and perceived Tai Chi metaphors, embodied movement principles, and emotional cultivation concepts. Findings suggest that metaphor focused Tai Chi instruction can foster engagement, focus, calmness, and social cohesion among vulnerable youth.
