Associate Editor Guidelines  Join as Associate Editor

The following guidelines help the Associate Editors equip themselves with essential practical information regarding their role as an Associate Editor with Crimson Publishers.

General Responsibilities of the Associate Editor: Reading the submission, Assigning reviewers, Evaluating the reviews, Making recommendations for rejection or acceptance

Role as an Associate Editor: As an Associate Editor, you are expected to play a vital role in an establishing and growing specialty. You are required to be working in a team comprising the requisite number of associate editors which also include you. The specialty once established, you oversee the peer-review process of the manuscripts.

Form a Board of Review Editors: Within first few days of the appointment as an Associate Editor, you are expected to build a team of Review Editors. The Associate Editors are advised to look for the diversity while choosing the Review Editors in the aspects such as; gender balance, geographical spread, different foci of the research within the scope of specialty. They can be chosen from outstanding postdocs, readers, lecturers, principal investigators, and assistant professors. The Review Editors are given attractive discounts in APCs with the Journal as they join Editorial Board and each time as they complete a review assignment. The Associate Editors are herewith encouraged to build a pool of Review Editors to enrich the review process. However, it is strongly encouraged for the Associate Editors to call upon the Review Editors, and have the right to revoke any invitations sent automatically. If someone is found unsuitable for the review, unresponsive and severely delayed; it is the responsibility of the Associate Editor to appoint for a new Review Editor and also offer a personal note with an explanation why they have been revoked.

Submittingan Inaugural Article: We request our Associate Editors to submit their inaugural articles in first few months of their appointment to the Editorial Board. The Publishers expect them to intimate a tentative title and an expected date of their submission. It may be noted that the Associate Editor may be a corresponding author among one of the multiple authors; this inaugural article sets the tone for the quality standards and draws the support of Editorial Board Members.

Think through organizing a research topic: Articles focused on a research area provides a platform for an online dialogue for advances, methods and ideas. The research-proposed topics and abstract submissions for proposed contributions facilitate for a better research focus and intensified collaboration. The research topics must be hosted by minimum of 2 Editors with previous editing experience. The Editors seek contributions from the peers and oversee the review process. The authors have the right to choose the preferred topic Editor as opposed to one who is assigned. As an Advisory Editor, it is one’s responsibility to oversee the review process as the Editor might have a conflict of interest.

Forming the Final Decision: After the review process has been completed, the Editor takes the final decision on the manuscript. Before taking the final decision, it is expected of the Associate Editor to consider all the comments from the reviewers and responses from the authors exercising his/her own expertise and judgement. If the Associate Editor is undecided to take final decision, they can contact the Editorial Office or invite more Review Editors for the review process. It is your responsibility to safeguard the literature and based on sound scholarly contribution, you validate the research article. If the Associate Editor recommends a manuscript for rejection based on reviewers’ recommendations, then he/she mentions it as ‘Recommend Rejection’ by clearly stating to justify your decision. This recommendation will be sent to the Chief Specialty Editor who verifies that the review process has been conducted in accordance with the Publishers’ policies and guidelines and the decision is taken. Once the manuscript is accepted for the publication, the Associate Editor can also choose to send additional recommendations to the authors. Once the final technical check by the Editorial Office is done, the manuscript is ready to enter the production.

Granting Extensions: We ensure a rapid review process and we also receive requests for extensions from time to time. As the Editorial Office receives the request for the long extension, it forwards it to the Associate Editor for the approval. If the Associate Editor is requested for an extension, they need to know whether the author or the reviewer has contacted; so that the deadlines may be extended accordingly. The appropriate mode of requesting for the extension is communicatedthrough emails.
